Our Research
Areas of Study

What is
Spiritual Seeking?
Key question: what are spiritual people seeking, and what are the benefits of spiritual practice?
Through a mixed-methods approach over three stages of research we will deepen our understanding of what spiritual people are seeking, what benefits they experience through their spiritual practice, and the sorts of activities they undertake to meet their spiritual needs.

We are currently seeking participants for Stage Two, where individuals will track their spiritual activities over a week. If you're interested in contributing to this research, click here to learn more and sign up.
Who am I?
Key question: how do spiritual people perceive themselves?
This study is our opening exploration into identity and seeks to understand how spiritual people define themselves and how closely they identify with others who share the same descriptive terms.

We are currently seeking participants to take part in a short survey that takes around 10-minutes to complete.

Spiritual Life Histories
Key question: how and why do people become spiritual?
Through interviews and life history analysis, the study explores personal, social, and cultural factors influencing belief changes, including life events like personal crises or transformations. It also examines how people form or find spiritual communities outside traditional religious institutions.
By gathering a diverse range of personal stories, the study aims to deepen our understanding of evolving belief systems and modern spiritual practices.
Meaning making and Tattoos
Key question: Why do we decide to ornament our bodies with tattoos?
We are looking at the decisions people make around tattoos, what motivates us to get tattoos, how do we use body art to express ourselves and who we share our tattoo stories with.

We are currently seeking participants with at least one tattoo to take part in our short 10 minute survey to explore these decisions as the first stage of our ongoing exploration of tattoos and meaning.
