We're excited to introduce Spiritual Life Histories, the second study under our Spirits and Sources project.

We're excited to introduce Spiritual Life Histories. This research focuses on understanding how individuals experience belief transformation and come to identify as spiritual but not religious (SBNR). In recent years, we've seen a noticeable shift, with more people distancing themselves from organised religion while continuing to seek spiritual fulfilment in new and diverse ways. Our study aims to explore how and why this is happening.
What We're Exploring
Through a combination of interviews and life history analysis, we’re investigating the personal, social, and cultural factors that lead individuals toward identifying as SBNR. One of the key areas we’re exploring is the life events that significantly shape a person’s spiritual journey. For instance, many people experience personal crises or transformative moments that deeply influence their spiritual beliefs. These events can be pivotal in shifting one's perspective away from traditional religious practices and towards a more individualised spiritual approach.
But it’s not just about individual change. We’re also examining how people find or create spiritual communities outside of traditional religious settings. As organised religion evolves, new communities and networks are emerging to fill the need for spiritual connection and support.
Why This Matters
By gathering a broad range of personal spiritual histories, we hope to offer a deeper understanding of how belief systems evolve over time. Our study will shine a light on how people navigate their spiritual lives outside the confines of institutionalised religion. It will also explore how these individuals find meaning, form new spiritual practices, and create communities that reflect their evolving beliefs.
We believe this research is important for understanding the changing landscape of spirituality in today’s world. As more individuals embrace SBNR identities, their stories offer valuable insights into how spirituality is being redefined in the modern era.
What’s Next?
We’re excited to share our findings as the study progresses and engage with the community on these important conversations. Stay tuned for updates on how spiritual journeys are shaping new paths and practices in a world where belief systems are becoming increasingly personalised.
We look forward to learning from the diverse spiritual life histories we uncover and sharing them with you!
